26-year-old Indian-origin doctor dies in a plane crash in UAE: Report
A plane crash claimed the lives of a 26-year-old Indian-origin doctor and a Pakistani pilot when a light aircraft from the Jazirah Aviation Club crashed off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
The Pakistani pilot, a 26-year-old woman, also lost her life in the crash.
According to a report by Khaleej Times, the crash occurred shortly after takeoff at 2 pm near the Cove Rotana Hotel, close to the beach. Among the deceased was Dr Sulaymaan Al Majid, a clinical fellow at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in the UK.
Born and raised in the UAE, Dr Sulaymaan had hired the aircraft for a sightseeing experience, accompanied by the Pakistani pilot.
Dr Sulaymaan’s father, Majid Mukarram, recounted the devastating sequence of events. The family, including Sulaymaan’s mother and younger brother, was present at the aviation club to witness the flight. “At first, we were told the glider had lost radio contact,” Majid told Khaleej Times. Later, conflicting updates suggested an emergency landing. “When we reached the hospital, we were told both occupants were critically injured and undergoing resuscitation efforts. Sulaymaan passed away before we could see him.”
The family learned of Sulaymaan’s passing when his time of death was recorded shortly after 4:30 pm. His younger brother was scheduled to take the next flight but canceled plans following the tragedy.
Dr Sulaymaan was known for his advocacy within the British medical community. As honorary secretary and later co-chair of the northern resident doctors committee of the British Medical Association, he campaigned for the reclassification of “junior doctors” as “resident doctors” and pushed for pay restoration for medical professionals in the UK.
Dr Sulaymaan Al Majid was laid to rest at Al Ghusais Graveyard on Sunday evening.
