Donald Trump’s FBI pick Kash Patel targeted by Iranian hackers: Report

Indian-American lawyer Kash Patel, selected by US President-elect Donald Trump to lead the federal bureau of investigation (FBI), was recently informed by the bureau that he was the target of an Iranian hacking operation, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Hackers likely gained access to some of Patel’s communications.
Alex Pfeiffer, Trump’s transition spokesman, declined to comment specifically on the hack and said, “Kash Patel was a key part of the first Trump administration’s efforts against the terrorist Iranian regime and will implement President Trump’s policies to protect America from adversaries as the FBI Director.”
Patel played a significant role in crafting Trump’s policies on Iran and is expected to continue prioritising national security under his new role.
This development follows several other instances of foreign hacking targeting Trump associates. Last month, the FBI notified Trump attorney and deputy attorney general pick Todd Blanche that his phone was targeted by Chinese hackers. In August, Trump attorney Lindsey Halligan was reportedly targeted by Iranian hackers. Donald Trump Jr. has also said the FBI informed him he was a top target for Iran.
Iran has targeted members of Trump’s first administration and sent stolen information from his presidential campaign to individuals affiliated with President Joe Biden’s campaign this summer. In June, Iranian hackers accessed Roger Stone’s email account and attempted to breach a senior Trump campaign official’s email. Iran denies US allegations of election meddling.
Relations between America and Iran have been tense since last year, driven by the US backing and military funding of Israel. The ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and Gaza has further strained relations. While both sides have discussed ceasefire agreements, casualties remain high.
