Biden government says aid delay reason for fall of Ukraine city to Russia

WASHINGTON: Biden administration said on Saturday the Ukrainian military withdrawal from Avdiivka was the result of Congress failing to provide additional money to support Ukraine’s war effort.
Ukraine withdrew from Avdiivka before dawn Saturday, the country’s first major battlefield loss since the fall of Bakhmut in May 2023 and almost two years to the day since President Vladimir Putin triggered a full-scale war by ordering the invasion of Ukraine.
“This is the cost of congressional inaction,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for National Security Council. “The Ukrainians continue to fight bravely, but they are running low on supplies.”
Senate passed an emergency aid bill including $60.1 billion for Ukraine this week, but it faces an uncertain fate in House of Representatives.
